One Party dictatorial regime prevailing in Tripura : Oppn leader Manik Sarkar

Democracy and citizens’ freedom are at stake in Tripura under present BJP-led regime. One Party dictatorial regime is prevailing in the State at present as opposition parties are not allowed to hold political activities and are coming under attacks. Leader of the Opposition and CPIM Politburo member Manik Sarkar said this in Agartala on Monday while addressing a press conference after meeting the Governor.

He told the media, a 6-member Opposition team led by Manik Sarkar met the Governor Ramesh Bais today to apprise him of the prevailing State politics and public interests. The delegation sought the Governor's intervention as the emerging democratic situation and rights of common people are in perilous condition, Sarkar said. Among others, deputy leader of the opposition Badal Choudhury was present in the delegation.

Justifying his allegations, Manik Sarkar said, the ruling party is vitiating the democratic ambience in the State. “They did not allow many people to cast votes during last Lok Sabha Polls, dissolved PRI bodies and above all, unleashed violence on Opposition supporters during BJP regime”, Sarkar alleged.

Sarkar pointed out that this was for the first time that the Opposition delegation had met the Governor pertaining to an emerging situation.

“Several times in the past, we apprised the State Government including the Chief Minister of unabated attacks on Opposition Party workers and Offices. Ruling party workers are not even allowing us to hold our political activities and assaulting us. But neither the Government nor the Chief Minister took any positive steps to address our concerns’, Sarkar told the media.

In view of the silence of the Government, we had no option, but to meet the Governor and inform him about our concerns. We listed seven points and held discussions with the Governor”, the opposition leader said.

Referring to recent attacks on CPIM MP Jharna Das Baidya, MLA Ratan Bhowmik and others as well as Party Offices in most of the places of the State, Manik Sarkar said, if people’s representatives are being attacked and prevented from carrying out their activities, situation of the State is aptly highlighted.

“We sought his intervention to protect the citizens’ rights and ensure proper democratic ambience”, Manik Sarkar asserted and added that the Governor had assured to look into the matters raised by the Opposition leaders.
