Thanga Darlong is a renowned Rosem player, a traditional bamboo flute instrument of the indigenous people of Tripura. He was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honor, in 2019 for his contributions to music and culture.
It has been reported that the 103 years old Rosem player Thanga Darlong has been bedridden due to old age for quite some time now.
He has stopped eating and drinking now, can't even speak. Thanga Darlong is currently staying at his daughter's house in Murui Bari.
Concerned about his health condition, Chief Minister of Tripura, Dr. Manik Saha instructed Dr. Supriya Mallick, the Director of Health Services, to initiate necessary measures for his treatment.
Responding to the directive, Dr. Shankha Subhra Debnath, Chief Medical Officer of Unakoti District, visited Thanga Darlong in Muruibari village, Kailashahar, Unakoti district on Monday and conducted a preliminary check-up. A pathology technician from the Unakoti District hospital will collect a blood sample from Thanga Darlong tomorrow.
Youth Affairs Minister of Tripura Tinku Roy also paid a visit to Thanga Darlong expressing concern for the Padma Awardee's health.
Thanga Darlong's health condition is a cause for concern, not only for his family and friends, but also for the wider Tripura community. He is a cultural icon and his music has brought joy to millions of people.
Following the comprehensive physical examination, the District Chief Medical Officer will again go to the house of Thanga Darlong for his checkup and treatment. Doctors are currently monitoring Thanga Darlong's physical condition 24 hours a day.
