The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice has scheduled a meeting on July 3 to discuss the matter of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and gather insights from stakeholders.
According to an official communication, the committee, headed by BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Modi, has informed all 30 members of the committee that their opinions on the UCC will be sought and considered during the meeting.
The official communique reminded members that the next meeting of the Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice will convene at 3:00 p.m. on July 3.
The meeting aims to hear the perspectives of representatives from various organizations regarding the public notice issued by the Law Commission of India on June 14, 2023.
The notice invited views from stakeholders on the Uniform Civil Code under the subject "Review of Personal Laws."
This development follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent endorsement of a Uniform Civil Code during his address to BJP workers in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
In his speech, Modi emphasized the need to reevaluate the existence of dual laws governing personal matters, prompting a spirited exchange of words between the ruling BJP and opposition parties.
The opposition has accused the government of using the UCC as a diversionary tactic in light of issues such as inflation and unemployment.
The upcoming meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice serves as an important platform for stakeholders to express their opinions on the UCC, thereby contributing to the ongoing dialogue surrounding this contentious issue. (Edited)
