Rehabilitated Brus facing multiple problems

The Bru Reang families, who were given land for rehabilitation at Kahamtwi Para area under Panisagar in Tripura, are demanding release of remaining funds for construction of house, restoration ration supply and arrangements of drinking water.

Speaking to the media, rehabilitated Bru leaders alleged their ration supply has remained suspended since October last. Besides, there is serious dearth of drinking water.

According to local Bru Reang leaders, the Government decided to rehabilitate 1032 families at the Kahamtwi Para along the Damchhera-Khedachhera road. However, only 381 families, out of the 1032 families have got Land for the construction of houses.

The Bru leaders alleged, while some of the lands which were distributed are in Tila (hillock) areas, many lands are situated at Lunga along the bank of rivulets. As the soil is soft around rivulets, Bru people are afraid of constructing houses in lunga areas.

“Around 70 families got lands in tila areas. These families received the 1st installment of Rs 50,000 out of a total sum of Rs 1.5 lakh and almost 60 percent of works of building houses have been completed. They are unable to complete the construction as they are not receiving the rest of the fund”, one Thanga Reang claimed.

While the suspension of the Ration supply is a major concern for the Bru people, they also alleged the approach road to the Kahamtwi Para is so narrow that it is difficult for two vehicles to pass. As a result, carrying construction materials is taking time, Bru leaders alleged.
