Hundreds of healthcare professionals in Tripura have joined in a 24-hour 'withdrawal of medical services' on Saturday in protest against the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The 'withdrawal of medical services' was called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) as a nationwide demonstration against the heinous crime.
As part of the protest, Doctors, nurses, and other medical staff gathered at Agartala Government Medical College and expressed their outrage and demanded swift justice for the victim. They also took part in the 24 hours 'withdrawal of medical services'.
Similar protests and 'withdrawal of medical services' were reported from other parts of the state, including Dharmanagar and Teliamura.
“This is not just an attack on a doctor but a brutal assault on the entire medical fraternity and society,” said a protesting doctor in Agartala.
He added, “We demand exemplary punishment for the perpetrators and stringent measures to ensure the safety of healthcare workers.”
The tragic incident in Kolkata has sent shockwaves across the country, sparking widespread condemnation and anger.
Political parties in Tripura have also joined the chorus of protests, demanding a thorough investigation and the strictest possible punishment for the accused.
Owing to the protest, Dharmanagar District Hospital took almost a deserted look today. While emergency services remained operational at Dharmanagar District Hospital, routine outpatient departments and elective surgeries were suspended.
Hospital authorities confirmed that the withdrawal of services was being strictly enforced, with only essential care being provided.
