The Hospital has already added improved radiation and medical facilities. However, lack of surgical facilities put patients in troubles.

Medical Superintendent of the hospital Dr Gautam Majumder on Thursday said, “Earlier there were a number of shortcomings due to which the regional cancer hospital could not treat all kinds of patients but now with some of the new inclusions, the hospital has achieved new heights. From February this year, we started undertaking surgeries too”.

Cancer-Hospital-Agartala-enewstimeAccording to Dr Majumder, in Tripura 60 to 70 people were found affected with some kind of cancer in every one lakh population. The numbers were even higher in the neighboring Mizoram with 200 people per population.

He said, the reason behind Mizoram’s poor condition in terms of cancer graph was liquid tobacco. Since, most of the cases even today were caused by this liquid tobacco and now the disease has become a genetic problem in the state.

However, he said, Tripura was still in better condition compared to the other states of the North Eastern region and it was reporting around 2,500 cancer patients every year.

“As per our assumptions, the numbers are higher. We fail to identify at least 500 patients every year who miss out from the treatment and thus we are planning to conduct screening camps covering all the districts of the state so that we can reach out with treatment to those who are not coming forward for treatment for various reasons such as social stigma or inner fear psychosis”, he said.

Putting light on screening camps, he said, “The screening camps will be organized in the health facilities available along the National Highway. Starting from Dharmanagar district hospital to Kumarghat CHC, Ambassa district hospital, Regional cancer Hospital, Bishalgarh sub-divisional hospital, Gomati district hospital, Santirbazar hospital and the line shall end at Jolaibari community health centre”.

According to him, once in a quarter of year screenings will be done in all the hospitals where patients will be brought from the areas stretched in the radius 50 kilometers from the health facility.
