Tripura: Bru Reang people block road demanding basic amenities

The Reang people of Gandachhara Ultachhara took to the streets on Tuesday, staging a road blockade to voice a series of demands, which included issues related to road infrastructure, access to drinking water electricity and other issues. Specifically, residents from Kantapara's Bru Settlement initiated the road blockade on the Gandachhara-Ambasa road starting at 6 o'clock in the morning today.

The primary grievances cited by the demonstrators revolve around a perceived lack of development and progress, despite substantial allocations from the central government.

In particular, they highlighted the absence of vital amenities such as a health sub-center in the Bru settlement camp, access to electricity, clean drinking water, and well-maintained road facilities. These issues have not only impeded communication but have also left many camps without essential PRC and ST certificates.

Additionally, protestors raised concerns about alleged corruption within the rationing system. They alleged ration shop dealers are involved in extensive corrupt practices, notably in the distribution of rice.

The protestors maintained that various authorities, including the SDM and others are aware of these issues, yet no action has been taken against the accused dealer. Consequently, the Bru people decided to stage the road blockade as a means of drawing attention to their concerns.

In response to the road blockade, the Gandachhara SDM arrived at the scene. Following a lengthy discussion with the demonstrators, the SDM and concerned officials assured that their demands would be addressed.  Later, the protesters cleared the road blockade by 12 noon.

As a consequence of the road blockade, numerous vehicles, both large and small, were stranded on the affected roads, leading to severe inconvenience for passengers.
