Tripura : Bru Reang people block road in Gandachhara

The inmates of the Gandachhara Bru Reang Settlement Camp held a road blockade, voicing demands for the restoration of government aid. From 7 am onwards, the Reang inhabitants of the Bru Settlement in the Ultachhara region of the Gandachhara-Ambasa road began their peaceful protest.

The crux of their demands revolved around the alleged discontinuation of a monthly stipend of Rs. 5000 provided by the Government for the past five months and the cessation of supply of their monthly rice allocation from the current month.

Tripura-Bru-Reang-block-road-gandachharaUpon receiving news of the blockade, Gandachhara’s sub-divisional magistrate, Arindam Das, accompanied by a strong police force, arrived at the scene. Despite repeated discussions with the protesters, no resolution was reached.

The protesters, representing 674 families residing in the Ultachhara Kanantapara Bru Settlement Camp of the Gondadhara sub-division, insisted on the immediate resumption of their ration items, both online and offline. They also demanded the reinstatement of the monthly stipend of Rs. 5000 per family within the next 48 hours. Furthermore, they raised concerns about the inadequate funding for toilet construction.

Their road blockade, which began at 7 am, continued in protest against these issues. By 5 pm, the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of Dhalai district arrived at the site and engaged in discussions with the protesters.

The ADM assured the protesters that their ration items would be made available online within a week. However, he clarified that he had no jurisdiction over the issue of the Rs. 5000 stipend, but promised to address the matter with the central government.

Despite these assurances, the protesters remained unconvinced, and their blockade continued until 7 pm. The blockade resulted in a significant traffic jam, causing immense inconvenience to commuters throughout the day.
