In a clarion call against pollution, Chief Minister of Tripura, Dr. Manik Saha, announced that the state government would introduce the 'Plastic Free Tripura' campaign with the objective of eradicating plastic from the region.
The Chief Minister made the announcement during the "Melaghar Rath Yatra Mela & Utsav" on Monday.
Addressing the audience, the Chief Minister expressed his concern over the garbage found in and around the renowned Neer Mahal.
He disclosed that Sudha Murthy, Chairperson of Infosys Foundation, had recently visited the site and shared her disappointment regarding the litter.
Assuring prompt action, Dr Manik Saha stated that the government would soon launch the 'Plastic Free Tripura' movement, taking inspiration from the successful 'Nesha Mukta Tripura' campaign.
Highlighting the cultural significance of the event, the Chief Minister emphasized that the Ratha Yatra in Melaghar not only popular and grabs attention within Tripura but also attracts visitors from neighboring Bangladesh annually.
He pointed out the richness of Tripura's art, culture, and traditions, drawing from his recent visit to tribal-dominated areas.
The Chief Minister stressed the importance of firsthand experiences in understanding and appreciating the beauty of the local culture and traditions, underscoring the state's pride in these aspects.
Furthermore, Dr Saha highlighted the role of faith and spirituality in society, citing the Prime Minister's speeches during international visits.
He also referred to the gradual shift from atheism to embracing faith and spirituality.
In this context, the Chief Minister highlighted the dedication of the people of Melaghar in preserving their cultural heritage and traditions.
He expressed the belief that divinity resides within each individual and emphasized the responsibility to safeguard the cultural heritage for future generations.
In view of the growing pollution and environmental degradation, Tripura Government's 'Plastic Free Tripura' appears to be a timely step.
The campaign aims to combat plastic pollution and foster a sustainable future for Tripura, while also celebrating the state's vibrant traditions and attracting visitors from both within and outside the region.
