Tripura News: Death of a youth sparks large scale vandalism, arson in Gandachhera

Death of a youth sparked large scale vandalism and arson in Gandachhera (Gandachhara) under the Dhalai District of Tripura on Friday. As the tension is palpable, many villagers took refuse to nearby forests fearing for life.

A wave of panic and tension swept through Gandacherra as violence erupted following the death of a youth, Parameswar Reang on Friday. Numerous homes and shops were destroyed and set ablaze, and several individuals were assaulted.

The turmoil began when Parameswar Reang's body was returned from the GBP Hospital to his hometown. Parameswar sustained injuries after a violent confrontation with another group of people during Ananda Mela at the 30 Card Area in Gandachhara on July 7 last.

Parameswar was promptly referred to the GBP Hospital in Agartala for treatment. However, the youth succumbed to his injuries today. The death news of the youth sparked in Gandachhara which escalated after his body reached his home town.  

According to residents of Gandachhera, local Police did not enhanced security even as simmering tension was palpable in the area.

“Police did not arrange or deploy adequate security to quell the tension before deceased’s body reached Gandachhara”, alleged one of the villagers on condition of anonymity.

Severe attacks were reported in the 33 KB area, 30 Card area, and Tislighat, with instances of arson and assaults on police officers. It was reported several houses were set ablaze, shops were ransacked and bottles were thrown in some other houses causing extensive damage to property.  

Bengali villagers took shelter in the nearby forest as tensions remained high and people are anticipating more violence. Police had not released any official statements at the time of the last report.

Meantime, Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma called for peace. He told the people of the Reang Community to maintain peace. He also said that he had a talk with top Police Official of the State and the Police Official assured him that justice would be served for the deceased's family.
