In a surprising turn of events, Kailasahar has demonstrated its distinct political stance in the 2024 LS Polls. Even as the BJP gained leads in 59 out of the 60 assembly constituencies in Tripura, the Congress-backed INDI Alliance took a lead in the 53-Kailasahar assembly constituency.
Congress MLA Birajit Sinha, representing Kailasahar, expressed his belief during a press conference that the lead of the INDIA Bloc would guide the opposition party’s future course of action against the BJP in Tripura.
In the East Tripura Lok Sabha seat, BJP candidate Kriti Devi Deb Varman gained significant margins in the 50-Pabiachhara, 51-Fatikray, and 52-Chandipur Assembly Constituencies.
However, the INDIA bloc candidate Rajendra Reang took the lead in the 53-Kailasahar Assembly Constituency under Unakoti District – the only Assembly segment in Tripura where an INDIA bloc candidate has got a lead.
Rajendra Reang, took the lead with a margin of 2307 votes. Following the announcement of these results, Birjit Sinha held a press conference at the Unakoti District Congress Bhavan in Kailasahar city on Tuesday afternoon.
During the press conference, Birjit Sinha, the former president of Tripura Pradesh Congress, praised and congratulated the people of Kailasahar for their spirit of protest and their constant fight against injustice. He expressed his gratitude to the people of Kailasahar for their continued support, as demonstrated in the Lok Sabha polls.
Sinha also reflected on the political history of Tripura since its inclusion in the democratic process, noting the ongoing political rivalry between the Congress and CPI(M). However, he pointed out that these two parties had united to contest the 2023 assembly polls. Despite this alliance, Sinha continued to represent the Congress party in Kailasahar.
In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the Congress and CPI(M) parties once again joined forces, and the India Alliance candidate for the East Tripura Lok Sabha seat was Rajendra Reang. Sinha expressed his hope that the results of the Lok Sabha polls in Kailasahar would inspire opposition movements in Tripura in the future.
Despite the presence of three Congress MLAs and eleven CPIM MLAs across the state, the Anti-BJP candidate did not lead in any other MLA seats apart from Kailasahar, Sinha pointed out.
