Tripura News: Wanted accused found dead in Police custody

Death of a 35-year old wanted accused in Police custody triggered sensation. The incident occurred at Sonamura Police Station in Tripura.

Jamal Hussain of Bolardefa under Sonamura police station under Sepahijala was nabbed by Sonamura police in the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday at around 1 am from his residence. Acting on a specific information Police picked up Jamal against whom two arrest warrants were pending, one from Bishalgarh and the other from Agartala since 2009 and 2016. Jamal had fled to Dubai and got settled there. He had come here to meet his family members around three months ago.

During the police raid Jamal once tried to flee but in vain. Before bringing him to Sonamura Police lock up, he was taken to Sonamura Hospital for health check up, as usual. Sometime after he was brought to Sonamura police station, he complained of chest pain and was then taken to hospital from where he was referred to Melaghar Hospital. In Melaghar hospital after initial treatment Jamal was feeling better and he was brought back to Sonamura police station and put behind the bars.

But this morning at around 7 am when police went to wake him up, they found him dead. That set the police into tizzy. Immediately an Executive Magistrate was informed and in his presence the body was sent to Sonamura morgue. From there the body was later shifted to Agartala for post mortem.

Police said Jamal died due to massive cardiac arrest. But Jamal's family contradicted the claim and alleged that Jamal died due to police torture in the custody and demanded investigation by impartial entity and punishment of the policemen involved.

Jamal’s wife Raseda Khatun filed a formal complaint against the police and copies of the complaint were sent to SP Sepahijala Krishnendu Chakravertty.

Adil SP Ranadhir Debbarma, SDPO BB Das and other Police officials visited the police station.

Later, his body was handed over to relatives after the post mortem and he was buried in the evening.

Jamal was scheduled to leave for Dubai on September 22 next.
