Promptness of Tripura Police foiled a ‘love jihad’ attempt on Friday. One youth of minority community lured a minor girl of a different religion and eloped with her today. However, Police were smarter and nabbed the duo at Chennai Airport today.
Sources said, a rowdy local youth, Rubel Hussain, lured a minor girl of Natun Tila under Jatrapur PS in Sepahijala district and fled away with the girl on Friday early morning. The youth hails from neighbouring village. Local people of Jatrapur described the incident as 'Love Jihad' and vented serious anger. They demanded exemplary punitive action against Rubel.
Notably, the father of the minor girl was seriously ill and was undergoing treatment at GB Hospital. Taking the advantage, Rubel prepared a detailed plan to flee away along with the girl to Chennai.
Accordingly, Rubel with the girl boarded the Agartala-Chennai plane today. However, a close relative of the girl sensed the danger and informed Police. Reacting sharply, Police led by Sepahijala SP Krishnendu Chakravartty alerted all the Police stations including Agartala Airport PS.
After the receiving the information, Police contacted Airport authority and the authority confirmed that the duo had boarded a Chennai-bound flight and left Agartala. The Police in Chennai Airport were also intimidated. As soon as the duo de-boarded at Chennai airport, local Police arrested them.
Meanwhile, a case relating to kidnapping was filed at Jatrapur Police. After Chennai Police arrested the duo, a Police team from Jatrapur PS led by SI Vidya Debbarma reached Chennai today evening. As there was no plane ticket available on Saturday – the duo would be brought back to Tripura on Sunday.
While hectic Police activities were going on, physical condition of the father of the minor girl deteriorated in GB Hospital. Unfortunately, he died in the hospital today. The news of his death and the incident of eloping of the girl had cast gloom in Jatrapur area. Also, the love jihad incident had sparked serious resentment among the residents of Jatrapur and adjoining areas.
