Tripura: Terminated teacher commits suicide, poisoned baby in critical condition

One of the terminated 10323 teachers, Rumi Debbarma committed suicide by consuming acid at her residence in Khowai and later collapsed in a hospital in Agartala on Saturday. Her one year old baby was also admitted in Hospital in critical condition and it is being suspected that Rumi Debbarma had poisoned the baby.

 

Rumi Debbarma was a meritorious student and topped the University in her post-graduation in education. Debbarma who hailed from Nakhatrabari village of Khowai belonged to a well to do family. Like Rumi, her husband Dinesh Debbarma is also one of 10323 retrenched teachers, sources claimed

 

According to sources, Debbarma went deep inside a rubber plantation and committed suicide with her child at around 3 pm. She was then rushed to Khowai hospital at around 4 pm. For better treatment, they were later referred to GBP hospital and subsequently ILS. She was declared dead at the ILS hospital whereas her baby boy was still under treatment. The doctors said, efforts are on to revive the boy but still his condition is critical. 

 

As soon as the news spread, a number of 10,323 protesting teachers rushed to the spot and started protesting. One of the protestors said, “Altogether 80 people have died so far due to the frustration of losing their jobs. We want a solution and our demand for justice must be fulfilled. We shall not retreat even in the face of bullets”, one of the agitators said.

 

Meanwhile, some of the 10,323 teachers had shaved their heads and some women among them shortened their hair in protest.
