Discover the entrepreneurial journey of Krishna Chandra Das, a Tripura farmer from poverty to prosperity through a thriving agro-allied farm, creating jobs and earning recognition as a progressive farmer in 2024.

Agartala/Sabroom May 5, 2025 : A remarkable story of grit and triumph unfolds at Thaibong Gram Panchayat under the Sabroom subdivision, Tripura.

Krishna Chandra Das, a young farmer who once battled crushing poverty, has transformed his life and community through sheer determination and entrepreneurial spirit. His journey from selling puffed rice on the streets to building a thriving, self-sustaining farm is not just a tale of personal success but an inspiration for aspiring farmers across India.

A Childhood Marked by Struggle

Krishna Chandra Das’s early years were defined by hardship. Born into a family grappling with financial instability, he was forced to abandon his education after Class 8. As a child, he roamed the alleys of Sabroom, balancing baskets of puffed rice on his head to contribute to the family’s meager income.

Despite the adversity, young Krishna nurtured a burning ambition. Watching others enjoy fine clothes and festive feasts, he made a silent vow: one day, he would bring joy and stability to his family.

The Birth of a Farming entrepreneurship

In 2015, Krishna took his first step toward realizing that dream. With limited resources, he leased a small pond and ventured into fish farming. This modest beginning marked the start of an extraordinary journey. His relentless drive and keen business acumen ensured he never looked back.

Soon, he established a broiler chicken farm at his home, which, at present, houses an impressive 8,000 chickens.

In 2018, with government support, he diversified into pig rearing and expanded his fishery operations. His farm now boasts 19 ponds and approximately 40 pigs, a demonstration of his vision and hard work.

Krishna’s farm is more than a business – it’s a source of earning opportunity for others too. Employing nine permanent workers with monthly salaries ranging from ₹9,000 to ₹12,000, he has created a ripple effect of economic empowerment in his community.

His ambition doesn’t stop here; Krishna aims to scale his operations further, generating more jobs and fostering sustainable growth.

A Test of Resilience: The 2024 Floods

His entrepreneurial journey was not without setbacks. In August 2024, Tripura was ravaged by catastrophic floods, and Krishna’s farm bore the brunt.

Fifteen pond embankments collapsed, and his chicken farm was submerged, resulting in losses estimated at ₹60 lakh. For many, such a blow would have been insurmountable. But Krishna’s indomitable spirit shone through.

With a strong resolve, he rebuilt his farm, brick by brick, proving that true success lies in rising after every fall.

Recognition and Inspiration

Krishna’s perseverance earned him well-deserved recognition. In 2024, the Tripura government honored him with the second prize as a “Progressive Farmer of Tripura” at a prestigious ceremony in Agartala.

His entrepreneurial story, alongside those of 20 other farmers, inspired former South District Magistrate Saju Wahid to publish a magazine chronicling their struggles and triumphs.

This publication has reached every corner of the state, motivating countless others to pursue their dreams.

On May 1, 2025, Krishna’s farm welcomed a delegation of dignitaries, including South District Magistrate Mohammad Sajjad P, South Zilla Sabhsdhipati Dipak Datta, Subdivisional Magistrate Shibjyoti Datta, and Satchand Block Development Officer Anupam Das.

Impressed by his innovative approach and sustainable practices, they showered praise on his efforts and pledged comprehensive government support to fuel his future endeavors.

A Voice for the Youth

In a candid conversation with journalists, Krishna shared wisdom that resonates far beyond Tripura’s borders.

“Many young people exhaust their prime years chasing jobs,” he said. “But with self-confidence and a willingness to start a farm or economic venture, anyone can achieve success.”

His words challenge the conventional mindset, urging the youth to embrace entrepreneurship and self-reliance.

Leading by Example: The FPO Connection

Krishna’s work-periphery extends beyond his farm. He is an active member of the Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO) ‘Feni Agro Producer Company Limited,’ which unites 172 farmers from Sabroom subdivision.

This collective provides critical resources, guidance, and support to its members, fostering a collaborative ecosystem for agricultural innovation.

Under the leadership of Bishwajit Majumdar, another celebrated farmer from Northeast India, the FPO is driving sustainable farming practices and economic growth in the region.

A Ray of Hope: From poverty to prosperity

Krishna Chandra Das’s journey is a powerful reminder that no obstacle is too great when fueled by unwavering dreams and relentless effort.

From the stark poverty, he has built a successful venture, not just for himself but for his community. His story underscores the transformative potential of agriculture and the importance of resilience in the face of adversity.
