India, Nepal will not allow misuse of open borders by terror elements, criminals: PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that India and Nepal will not allow misuse of open borders by terror elements and criminals. In his press statement after holding delegation level talks with his Nepalese counterpart K P Sharma Oli in New Delhi Saturday afternoon, Mr Modi said, the security agencies of the two countries will intensify their cooperation.

Prime Minister Modi said, peace, stability and development in Nepal is the priority for both the nations. He said the new Constitution of Nepal after a decade of strife is a significant achievement for the Himalayan nation. The Prime Minister expressed confidence that Nepal will be able to scale new heights of peace and stability be resolving all Constitutional issues through political dialogue and by taking along all sections of Nepalese population.

Mr Modi said, India’s assistance has always been constructive and in line with the priorities of people of Nepal. The Prime Minister said the two countries are working on hydro projects with combined capacity of seven thousand Mega Watt. He said quick and successful completion of the projects can be gateway to Nepal’s economic prosperity.
Mr Modi said, trade and investment are strong pillars of relations between the two neighbours therefore early completion of Integrated Check Posts and construction of road in Terai region will boost trade infrastructure.

The Prime Minister also promised India’s support for opening Ayurveda college in the Himalayan nation. In his statement, Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli said the main reason for his visit is to clear the misunderstandings that have settled in last few months. He said India is Nepal’s biggest trade partner. Saying that India is now emerging as an economic power house, he said India’s transformation is an inspiration to Nepal.  He expressed hope that Indo-Nepal relations will benefit from the discussions.

Mr Modi and Nepal PM Oli also inaugurated 400 kilovatt India(Muzzafarpur)-Nepal (Dhalkebar) transmission system. The two countries also inked nine agreements in fields like road infrastructure, arts and culture and railways sector. Later briefing media this evening, Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar said, Prime Minister Oli briefed Prime Minister Modi about developments which took place in Nepal after adoption of new Constitution. Mr Jaishankar said, talks between Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Oli were held in a cordial atmosphere. He said, the two Prime Ministers reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral relations. Mr Jaishankar said, both the leaders agreed to cooperate on all matters relating to national security. He said there was a sense in meeting to further strengthen people to people contact.
