October 19, 2017: Deepawali, the festival of lights is being celebrated across the country today. The national capital is fully decked up to celebrate the festival.
People in large numbers were seen thronging to shops to buy candles, lamps and gifts for their near and dear ones last evening.
Authorities have urged the people to celebrate Diwali in a safe and pollution-free manner. Delhi Police has beefed up security at public places in the national capital.
On the occasion, Delhi Metro services will be available till 10 PM today.
The last Metro train service will start at 10 in the night from terminal stations of all Metro Lines. Services will be as usual for rest of the day.
President and Vice President and Prime Minister Narendra have extended their greetings to the countrymen on Deepawali. President Ram Nath Kovind, in his message, said the festival celebrates the victory of light over darkness, goodness over evil and justice over injustice.
He appealed to the people to initiate efforts towards illuminating the lives of all with joy and prosperity and spreading the light of love and fraternity.
He also urged the people to take a resolve to celebrate Deepawali in a clean and pollution-free manner as well as build a healthy, prosperous and sensitive nation and society.
In his message, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said that Deepawali signifies the victory of good over evil and encourages us to emulate the noble and virtuous qualities of Lord Rama. He wished that the festival will light up our lives and usher in peace, prosperity and happiness.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also greeted the people on the occasion of Diwali.
In a tweet, Mr Modi hoped that this auspicious festival brightens the lives of people with prosperity and good health.
Reports of Diwali celebrations are coming in from abroad also including Sri Lanka and UAE.
Kali puja will also be celebrated today in several states including West Bengal, Odisha, Tripura, Bihar and Jharkhand. (AIR News)
