August 30, 2017: Government has decided to carry out a series of reform initiatives in the Indian Army, including restructuring of around 57,000 posts of officers and other staff to enhance its combat capabilities.
Defence Minister Arun Jaitley told media in New Delhi today that 65 out of 99 recommendations of the Lt. Gen (Retd) Dr. D B Shekatkar Committee pertaining to army have been accepted. The panel was appointed to recommend measures to enhance combat capability of the armed forces. Jaitley said the first phase of the reforms involves redeployment and restructuring of approximately 57,000 posts of officers,JCOs, ORs and civilians.
AIR correspondent reports, the reforms which have been approved by the Defence Ministry include restructuring of various repair bases of the Army besides ensuring structural improvement of the National Cadet Corps (NCC).
Closure of Military Farms and Army postal establishments in peace locations and improving standards for recruitment of clerical staff and drivers in the Army are also the part of the reforms.
These reforms will be completed in all respects by 31 December 2019. The restructuring is aimed at enhancing Combat Capability in a manner so that the personnel can be used for improving operational preparedness and civilians can be redeployed in different wings of the Armed Forces for improving efficiency.These reforms will be completed in by the end of 2019.
