Millet, the robust and nutritious cereal championed by India, is set to make its debut on the global stage as it takes the spotlight at a state dinner hosted by US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden in honor of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House on Thursday.

A captivating display featuring millet stalks forming the backdrop will accompany Prime Minister Modi during his remarks at the dinner.

According to the menu unveiled by the White House, the first course will showcase marinated millet served with grilled corn kernel salad and compressed watermelon.

Millet-Biden-ModiThe arrangement and menu were meticulously prepared by Chef Nina Curtis, in collaboration with the First Lady, providing a sneak preview of the upcoming culinary experience.

In line with a suggestion from the Indian government, the United Nations has designated 2023 as the Year of Millet. This coarse-grained cereal, widely cultivated in Asia and Africa, possesses excellent health benefits, resilience, and drought-resistant qualities, making it an ideal candidate for sustainable farming and ensuring food security.

President Biden said during a press preview, “With this official state visit, we are bringing together the world’s oldest and largest democracies”.

“Our partnership with India, after years of strengthening ties, has become deep and expansive as we jointly address global challenges”.

However, our relationship extends beyond governments. We are celebrating the familial and friendship bonds that transcend borders, connecting people in both of our nations.”

Acknowledging Prime Minister Modi’s vegetarian preferences, the First Lady mentioned that Chef Nina Curtis, a pioneer in plant-based cuisine, collaborated with White House chefs to craft a remarkable vegetarian menu.

She further added, “Guests will have the option to include fish (Sumac-roasted Sea Bass) in the main course, if they choose.”

During Prime Minister Modi’s first dinner at the White House in September 2014, he observed a fast for the Navratras and contented himself with a glass of warm water.

It was an intimate gathering hosted by President Barack Obama for Prime Minister Modi and his delegation.

In addition to the marinated millet and grilled corn salad, guests will savor compressed watermelon complemented by a tangy avocado sauce.

The main course will feature stuffed portobello mushrooms and a creamy risotto infused with an Indian touch—saffron, adding a distinct flavor to the dish.

The ambiance will be enriched with saffron tones, paying homage to Indian culture and the Tricolour.

Guests entering the pavilion on the South Lawn will be greeted by lush green drapery, while saffron flowers will adorn each table, symbolizing the colors of the Indian flag, as highlighted by President Biden during the press briefing.

To further incorporate an Indian essence, the dinner will feature PATEL Red Blend 2019, a wine from a Napa Valley winery owned by Raj Patel, who hails from Gujarat.

According to the winery’s website, this wine is priced at $75 per bottle. Additionally, guests will enjoy Stone Tower Chardonnay “Kristi” 2021 and Domain Carneros Brut Rose.

The evening’s entertainment will be provided by Penn Masala, recognized as the world’s first South Asian A Cappella Group.

Having previously performed at the White House during President Barack Obama’s tenure, their mesmerizing musical talent will captivate the audience once again.

A Cappella, a style of music performed without the accompaniment of musical instruments, promises to add a unique and enchanting touch to the evening’s festivities.
