May 28, 2017: In Meghalaya, a protest by the Khasi Students Union against the ongoing construction of railway project turned violent in Ri-Bhoi district and machineries used for constructing the project were set on fire.
According to police, KSU leaders and members went to the project site at Ronghuna under Byrnihat police station to stop the construction and set on fire various machineries. While proceeding towards Nongpoh from the project site, KSU members were intercepted at Shangbangla village on National highway – 6 and called to Nongpoh police station for talk with the District administration.
As hundreds of KSU activists assembled outside the police station, a clash broke out between the protesters and police personnel after the mob refused to disperse, which led lathi charge. Two KSU leaders were detained by police. The Ri-Bhoi district administration was assessing the situation and took all measures to put the situation under control. (AIR News)
