ProMASS: Jan 03, 2017:  Nagaland Chief Minister’s Office has said that the ultimatum dated 10th of last month with regard to conduct of elections to Urban Local Bodies, submitted by the Naga Hoho and the ENPO was discussed in the cabinet meeting held on 13th of the same month. According to an official bulletin, the cabinet felt that it could be in the best interest of the State to go ahead with the elections to the ULBs, rather than wait for the court verdict on the issue. However, keeping in mind that the ultimatum was submitted by the two apex bodies, a meeting was therefore held with representatives of both the organisations at the Chief Minister’s private residence in Dimapur on 17th of last month. The position of the government and the need to hold elections was again explained and reiterated. It was felt that all the issues raised were amply clarified on that day and the matter has been understood by all present, CMO said, adding that the announcement of dates for holding the municipal and town councils were hence issued only on 21st of last month after the meeting the afore mentioned meeting. The CMO therefore maintained that the government has neither ignored nor did it have the intention to sideline the ultimatum submitted by the two apex bodies. CMO further maintained that the government is clear that neither the Nagaland Municipal (3rd amendment) Act 2016 nor the reservation of seats for women in anyway infringes upon article 371(A) of the Constitution. Thus, Chief Minister T R Zeliang has appealed all to extend their cooperation in peaceful conduct of elections to the ULBs which has been set in motion. |
