Manabendra Nag: Agartala, Sep 19, 2016:Pulses produced in Tripura and other North Eastern States are of high quality, opined Dr CS Praharaj, the Nodal Officer of Indian Institute of Pulses Research (IIPR) in Agartala on Sep 19, 2016. Speaking at a State level Farmers Meet on promotion of Pulses, he added, there is enough scope for the expansion of pulses cultivation the NE Region and farmers can earn a good return. He discussed about several initiatives have been designed by the Union Ministry of Agriculture for the benefits of farmers. The objectives of the initiatives are to make cultivation innovative and provide easy to access techniques. Pulse cultivation requires less of water and deep rooted pulses act as a natural nitrogen fixer that improves fertility of cultivable land without using fertilizers.
State Forest Rural Development and Election Minister Naresh Jamatia inaugurated the Meet today. The State level meet was organized by IIPR in collaboration with ICAR Research complex for NEH Region, Umiam and Tripura Centre. Around 150 farmers, many of whom were women cultivators, attended the Meet. Inaugurating the Meet Minister Naresh Jamatia said, ICAR Research Complex for NER at Agartala is doing excellent work for the benefits of the farmers. However, it is important that farmers, especially farmers of remote part of the State come to know about various innovative and scientific techniques of cultivation.
Language barrier played the role of a spoiler as experts expressed their experiences and views in English which local farmers failed to understand, said one of the farmers who attended the Meet.
