Apr 03, 2017: Mizoram has become the 27th state to join Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana scheme meant for revival of debt-stressed Discoms, which will help it get overall benefits of 198 crore rupees. The Centre and Mizoram have signed a MOU for operational improvement of the state’s Power Distribution Department. In a statement Power Ministry said, Mizoram will derive an overall net benefit of about 198 crore rupees by way of cheaper funds, reduction in aggregate technical and commercial and transmission losses. The MoU paves way for improving operational efficiency of the Power Distribution department of the State. The scheme will also allow speedy availability of cheaper power to more than 22 thousand households in the state that are still without electricity.
In Mizoram, at least 30 houses were destroyed by a strong hailstorm in Vairengte in Kolasib District. Properties including livestocks were also badly damaged by the hailstorm. However, there is no report of human casualty. In another incident, hailstorm has also destroyed houses in Chiahpui village in Ngopa Sub – Division of Champhai District. Trees were uprooted and electric poles destroyed. One person was injured in the hailstorm. A cyclonic storm accompanied by hailstorm also hit many villages in Ranikor area along the international Indo-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya’s South West Khasi Hills District in which more than 350 houses were affected. However, there was no report of casualties. The Block Development Officer, Ranikor Block, F.B. Basan said after accessing the situation, the District Administration set up one Relief Camp at Panchering village in which more than 20 families who have lost their houses were taking shelter. Basan said the number of affected families might increase because heavy rain accompanied by strong wind are still continuing.
