In Assam, people from all walks of life have welcomed the decision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to demonetize high denomination notes. People hoped that this move would help unearth black money and prevent circulation of fake notes. There were several cases of recovery of fake notes in Assam by police and security forces in the recent past. The ruling BJP also welcomed the move. Assam Governor Banwarilal Purohit said the demonetisation of 500 and 1,000 rupees notes will propel economic growth of the nation to a new trajectory. The Governor termed the Centre’s move as a “deadly blow to insurgency, terrorism and other anti-social activities”.

Meghalaya Governor V Shanmuganathan has lauded the decision of the Narendra Modi Government to do away with the circulation of the 500 and 1000 rupees denominations from the country. It can curb financing of terrorism through the proceeds of fake Indian currency notes and help eliminate black money and corruption. This step can effectively stop funds from subversive activities such as smuggling of arms, drugs, espionage and other anti-national activities, the governor said.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has welcomed the decision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to demonetise the currency notes of 500 and 1,000 denominations. In his congratulatory letter to the Prime Minister, Mr Khandu said that this revolutionary measure would have far-reaching impact on the fight of the nation against evils of corruption, black money, counterfeit notes and terrorism. The people of Arunachal Pradesh whole heartedly welcome this decision and are committed to support this effort, his letter read. The chief minister has appealed to the citizens of Arunachal not to panic. He said that enough provisions and time have been given to deposit or exchange the old currency notes of and every possible measure was being taken to ease public inconvenience.

However, Tripura CM Manik Sarkar termed the move a political gimmick and said the decision may not be successful in unearthing black money as mentioned. He also demanded actions to bring back black money stashed in foreign countries and book the culprits.
