Agartala, March 28, 2020: Dispelling fears of scarcity, an Air India cargo flight landed at Agartala with several essential goods today. As the country quarantine itself – so also the landlocked State, Tripura, cargo consignment will scale down panic buying in the State. Earlier, chopper arrived in Agartala with medicine on March 27. Despite, country wide lockdown, bringing essentials through cargo and chopper will bolster the confidence of people, experts opined.
Meanwhile, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb announced a Rs 229 crore special package in view of ongoing lockdown for the benefits of Priority Households, BPL and Antyodaya families as well as a group of 50 thousand poor APL families. The announcement came up yesterday, on March 27.
Cargo, chopper arrive with essentials
With lockdown curfew in force in Tripura, there was apprehension and concern about availability of essential commodities across the State. With markets are open, administration is vigilant against any sorts of hoarding and black marketing by unscrupulous elements.
However, State Government reiterated that there were adequate stock of essentials – moreover, the Government announced free rice supply to people of Priority Group and Antyodaya Anna Yojana. Steps have, already, been to distribute Mid Day Meal and food to kids as well as pregnant and lactating mothers registered in Anganwadi Centres. For homeless and other helpless needy people, Government and various social organizations including security personnel are distributing cooked and packed food items.
To ensure normal supply of essential items, an Air India cargo plane landed in Agartala today. Sources said, it has brought 77 cartoons of goods weighting 457 kg. Earlier, a chopper landed with medicines and other items in Agartala yesterday – on March 27. The State Government already informed media that Choppers had been pressed into service for bringing essential items including medicines to ensuring unhindered treatment of patients.
“Today’s Cargo consignment brought a huge relief in view of ongoing lockdown. Government is trying its best to maintain adequate stock of commodities. Arrival of cargo consignment will further harness the stock of goods in the State”, A Food department official commented on condition of anonymity.
Combating Covid-19
Considering plight of poor and needy families during lockdown, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb announced a special package of Rs 229 crore on March 27. The package will benefit families belonging to Priority groups, BPL and AAY as well as 50 thousand poor APL families. Combating Covid-19 menace caused huge hardships for weaker sections of the society – and the package will help them to maneuver the difficult time, source said.
Committee for stranded people
In an attempt to reach out and help stranded people, Tripura Government constituted a working committee yesterday. According to an order, issued by Chief Secretary of Government of Tripura, Manoj Kumar, the three-member working group led by principal secretary, Transport dept LH Darlong was formed to “sort out the issue of Tripura people stranded outside the State and people of other States stranded in Tripura. The Government will get in touch with other Governments as well as State Bhawans to resolve the problems of such stranded people”. Two other members of the working committee are Apurba Roy, IAS and DIGP R Gopla Rao, DIGP Crime Police Headquarters.
