The flood situation in Assam has worsened as torrential rain persists, causing increased water levels and inundating additional areas across the state.
According to the latest bulletin released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 119,800 individuals have been impacted by the floods in the districts of Dhemaji, Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Baksa, Barpeta, Darrang, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, Sonitpur, and Udalguri.
Among the affected districts, Nalbari has been hit the hardest, with approximately 45,000 people grappling with floodwaters. Baksa follows with 26,500 affected individuals, and Lakhimpur with 25,000, as reported by the ASDMA.
The floodwaters have engulfed a total of 20 districts and sub-divisions, resulting in the destruction of over 10,000 hectares of crops and affecting more than 100,000 animals.
To aid those affected, the state administration has established 14 relief camps in the flood-affected districts, while an additional 17 relief distribution centers are operational. Currently, more than 2,000 people have sought shelter in these relief camps.
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has promptly taken action, rescuing a total of 1,280 individuals so far.
Meanwhile, the regional center of the India Meteorological Department in Guwahati has issued an ‘orange alert,’ predicting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the state over the next few days.
The situation remains critical as Assam battles with the rising floodwaters, and authorities continue their efforts to provide relief and support to the affected population. (Edited)
