Guwahati, July 6: The tallest statue of Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder and freedom fighter Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee in Assam was formally inaugurated in Kokrajhar on Sunday by State Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, coinciding with the commemoration of his 125th birth anniversary.
The grand statue, which now stands as a prominent feature of Kokrajhar town, was unveiled in the presence of senior leaders, public representatives, and a large number of local residents. The project was supported by a Rs 10 lakh grant from the state government, along with contributions from community organizations and local leaders. The statue serves as both a visual centerpiece and a symbol of Dr. Mukherjeeโs lasting legacy in Indian political history.
The unveiling event was attended by Bijni MLA Ajay Roy, former Bilasipara MLA Ashok Singhi, Kokrajhar Municipal Board Chairperson Pratibha Brahma, and Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Park Committee President Santosh Tarafdar. Hundreds of citizens, including BJP supporters and community members, gathered for the occasion, reflecting the collective pride in this tribute.
In his address, Speaker Daimary described Mukherjee as a guiding figure in Indiaโs nationalist movement and a champion of unity. โThis statue is not just an artistic structureโit represents the values and vision that continue to inspire our country,โ he said. Other dignitaries also praised the Assam governmentโs role and the joint efforts of civic and political stakeholders in realizing the project.
Municipal Board Chairperson Pratibha Brahma highlighted the statueโs cultural and symbolic importance, stating, โIt adds a new dimension to Kokrajharโs identity and stands as a beacon of remembrance and respect.โ

Located at a key spot within Kokrajhar town, the statue is expected to serve as a center for civic interaction and historical awareness. The surrounding Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Park is being developed as a space dedicated to public learning and engagement on Indiaโs nationalist heritage.
With its commanding presence and deep historical relevance, the monument underlines Assamโs dedication to honouring national leaders who played a vital role in shaping the countryโs political and cultural path. (Edited)
