Even as the discussion on last minute alliance with IPFT in recently concluded Tripura Tribal Area Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Polls is continuing, Tripura unit of BJP started a two-day long review meeting over the poll performance in presence of all the party higher functionaries. The meeting was presided over by BJP North East organizational General Secretary Phanindra Nath Sharma.
Notably BJP won in 9 seats contesting in 14 seats, however, its ally IPFT drew a blank. As a result, even as BJP-IPFT is in power, it has to concede defeat to a newly floated TIPRA Motha led by Tripura’s Royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarman. TIPRA Motha won in 18 seats and one Independent also won.
Some of the leaders of Janajati Morcha leaders of BJP were vehemently opposing the alliance with IPFT. This section opined that BJP alone would be able to win in majority of seats in 28-seat TTAADC.
Although, BJP’s performance in the Poll was somewhat satisfactory, performance of its ally, IPFT ruined the possibility of winning the majority,
Sources said, “Considering party’s success rate – winning in 9 out of 14 contested seats – most of the Janajati Morcha leaders are of the view that BJP would have done far better if fought the polls alone. The last minute alliance destabilized the party’s internal equations which caused comparatively poor results”.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the source said, the party leaders have decided to strengthen the party’s base in the TTAADC with intense political activities so that the results could be improved in the times to come. However, most of the leaders have expressed satisfaction over the party’s performance despite contesting in lesser seats, the source added.
On the ensuing Municipal polls, the source said, “Now the task before the party is to ensure that no impact of the TTAADC polls cast clouds on party’s performance in upcoming Municipal elections.
Notably, there are several municipal areas that are close to the TTAADC areas. In the wake of fresh Covid spike, a fool proof strategy will be chalked out for ensuring victory in the municipal elections”.
