July 04, 2018: The Supreme Court has put the onus on the states to check incidents of mob violence saying no one can take law into their hands. It reserved its verdict on a plea seeking formulation of guidelines to curb such violent incidents in the country. Taking serious note of mob violence, a bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud yesterday said it cannot be confined to any particular motive. The bench said, they will pass an elaborate order in this regard on the petition.
During the hearing, the bench observed that the instances of vigilantism was actually mob violence, which is a crime.
Additional Solicitor General P S Narasimha said the Centre was alive to the situation and trying to deal with it. (AIR News)
