Agartala (Tripura) Jun 8: The healthcare sector of Tripura reached a new height as the first-ever kidney transplant in the State was completed successfully.  Importantly, the procedure was conducted free of cost.

A medical team comprising Tripura and Shija Hospital and Research Institute doctors, Manipur successfully carried out the Kidney transplant on Subham Sutradhar (20) at the AGMC & GBP Hospital for the first time on Monday. The kidney was donated by Subham’s mother Munna Saha Sutradhar. Both the mother and the son are in stable condition after the procedure, said  Medical Superintendent of the GBP Hospital Dr Sankar Chakraborty.

Addressing a press meeting today, Dr Chakraborty said, “The entire cost of the first-ever Kidney transplant has been borne by the state government”.  He also added for this kidney transplant, very recently the state government had signed a five year MoU with Shija Hospitals. Twelve doctors from Manipur led by the consultant nephrologist Guliver Potsangbam had come down to Tripura to conduct today’s procedure. The state government has also borne all the expenses incurred for their visit to the state.

Dr Chakraborty said, The doctors from the Shija Hospital will be coming to Tripura again in future if necessary for another transplant. The transplantation process started at 9 am today and ended at around 2.30 pm.

The Medical Superintendent also said, the patient and his parents met Chief Minister Saha during “Mukhyamantri Samipesu” (Chief Minister’s weekly meeting with the public) a few weeks ago, after which the doctors were asked to adopt required steps.

From Tripura’s side, in the team were Dr. Bijit Lodh, Dr. Mukut Debnath, Dr. Manas Gope, Dr. Samaresh Paul, Dr. Tapan Debbarma, Dr. Bhaskar Majumder, Dr. Anupam Majumder, Nursing officer Diptanu Sutradhar, Kishan Deb, Sumita Sinha, Prasenjit Mahajan, Nabajit Tripura. In the observation team were nursing in-charge Tapati Chakraborty, and transplant co-ordinator Himadri Kar in the team. Besides, the team of OT technician included Ratan Mani Debbarma and Dipak Chakraborty.

Nephrologist Dr Gulliver Potsangbam led the 13-member surgical team from Shija Hospitals in Imphal.

Buoyed at the success,  Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha has expressed his heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to all levels of medical personnel, including doctors and nurses involved in the successful first-ever kidney transplant surgery performed today at Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital.

Dr Manik Saha said, This complex surgery is a milestone in the history of medical services in our state, which seemed impossible a few days ago. It is due to the continuous steps taken by the state government for the development of medical services that kidney transplant surgery has become possible in the state today.

“The doctors and medical personnel of the state have once again proved that it is possible to treat complex diseases in the state itself. The state government’s continuous efforts for the development of medical services will continue in the future”, the Chief Minister said.

In his congratulatory message, Dr Saha wished a speedy recovery to both the kidney donor and the recipient.
