Agartala (Tripura) : Finally, wait is over as Tripura welcomes the Southwest Monsoon marking beginning of the crucial rainy season.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed the onset of monsoon in Tripura on Monday.
According to the IMD, the Southwest Monsoon made an early entry into Tripura arriving a full ten days ahead of its usual onset date. However, in the last year, monsoon arrived in the State even earlier – on May 13.
In an official statement, the Meteorological Centre in Agartala said the monsoon has now covered the entire state. This year’s arrival marks a deviation from the usual pattern, as the monsoon typically reaches Tripura in early June.

Moderate showers were recorded in West Tripura, North Tripura, and Dhalai districts, while light rain occurred in Khowai, Unakoti, and Gomati. Other parts of the state received only trace or very light rainfall during the same period, the IMD noted.

With the onset of the monsoon, the IMD has forecast intensified weather activity across the state in the coming days. A Yellow Alert has been issued for four consecutive days, warning residents of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms accompanied by lightning.
Forecast Highlights:
- May 27: Thunderstorms with lightning are expected to strike isolated areas in various districts of Tripura.
- May 28: Heavy rainfall, ranging between 7 cm and 11 cm, is likely to affect parts of Sepahijala, Gomati, and South Tripura districts.
- May 29: Dhalai district is expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall between 7 cm and 20 cm. Additionally, North Tripura, Sepahijala, Gomati, and South Tripura are likely to witness heavy showers in isolated locations.
- May 30: The IMD predicts another round of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Dhalai, with similar conditions likely to extend to North Tripura, Sepahijala, Gomati, and South Tripura.
Thunderstorm activity accompanied by lightning is anticipated to persist throughout the forecast period, impacting all districts to varying degrees.
The IMD has also warned of potential impacts due to the heavy rainfall. Urban flooding may occur in low-lying areas of North Tripura, Dhalai, Sepahijala, Gomati, and South Tripura districts, potentially disrupting municipal services such as water supply and electricity.
Agricultural fields in these districts could also suffer minor crop damage due to temporary water-logging, posing a limited threat to local productivity.
Authorities have advised the public to remain alert and take necessary precautions, especially in flood-prone and lightning-vulnerable areas.
