Like in previous years, the weekly market at Noagang Bazar in Panisagar subdivision of North Tripura is abuzz with the sale of Jhum cultivation products produced by the Indigenous people of Tripura.
Currently, the most marketable Jhum items are lemon, jackfruit, pineapple, different types of Jhum vegetables, and bananas.
Jhum cultivation also known as slash and burn or Shifting cultivation is an ancient practice of agriculture among the indigenous people of Tripura and states. As the jhum cultivators do not use chemical fertilizers and pesticides, the Jhum products are in great demand.
On Thursdays, the weekly market day is held at Noagang Bazar where a huge crowd of buyers gather to purchase Jhum products.
The jhum products of the Indigenous people of Tripura are exported to various local markets within the State as well as to Assam, Meghalaya, and other states.
The income from selling jhum items helps to run the families of the indigenous people.
Speaking to the media, a trader, Rubel Ranglong, also confirmed fruits, vegetables, and bananas from here are exported not only to other states but also to the neighboring country of Bangladesh.
In the next few days, other Jhum vegetables will come to the market. Jhum vegetables are in great demand among food lovers of different areas. Apart from vegetables, different flavoured Jum fruits are available in this market every season. The prices are also comparatively low.
One of the vegetables, known as Chinar among the indigenous people is expected to hit the jhum item market soon. Chinar is very popular vegetable among the locals.
