Agartala, August 26, 2019: A section of students of the second oldest college of the State – Ramkrishna College of Kailashahar today held a demonstration and gheraoed the Principal protesting against prescribed uniform of the college. Local source said, male students belonging to minority community attended college today wearing Punjabi breaking rule of the college. Concerned students argued that wearing Punjabi was a part of the heritage of the community. However, College authority objected and did not allow the students to attend classes – this irked the minority students and they gheraoed the Principal of the College. Police rushed to the spot – but students withdrew gherao agitation only after obtaining an assurance from the in-charge Principal – Soma Deb. She assured the agitating students that College authority would inform the higher authority about the specific preference of dresses of minority community students.
Ramkrishna College – being the second oldest College of the State – has a rich tradition and students of all faiths and religions studied here. However, never before, like today, there was any such controversy regarding the dress along religious line, opined a veteran of Kailashahar.
Reacting on the protest and agitation, Soma Deb said, “In every College of the State, students require to follow pre-fixed dress code – and individual college authority has no right to change it for students of any particular community or religion. Only higher authority can take a decision on it”.
Earlier, similar controversy hit Radha Kishore Institution and adamant students denied to wear school uniform. They are yet to wear school uniform despite decisions by SMC meetings against the move.
“Controversy over wearing college prescribed dress is unusual. We also studied in the college and never thought of breaking the prescribed dress code of the college. The present situation is uncalled for”, opined an ex-student of the College belonging to minority community on condition of anonymity.
The controversy is the result of malefic elements who are trying to disrupt normal and independent functioning of an institution, alleged locals.
