Agartala, April 30 (IANS): Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Wednesday announced that 91,871 women have become ‘Lakhpati Didis’- Self Help Group (SHG) members earning over Rs 1 lakh annually – out of the total 5.47 lakh women involved in SHG activities across the state.

Speaking at an event where 228 new government teachers received their appointment letters, Dr Saha emphasized that promoting women’s empowerment remains a key agenda of the state government.

‘Lakhpati Didi’ refers to a woman SHG member whose household income surpasses Rs 1 lakh per year. These women not only achieve financial independence but also act as role models by adopting sustainable income-generating practices that improve their quality of life.

Self Help Groups in Tripura play a vital role in transforming women into successful entrepreneurs through collective initiatives, financial education, and skill-building support.

The Chief Minister highlighted that the state government is committed to strengthening this mission by encouraging diverse livelihood options and integrating efforts across departments for effective implementation.

According to Dr Saha, Tripura currently has 53,623 SHGs operating under the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission, comprising around 4.84 lakh rural women. Under the Tripura Urban Livelihood Mission, 5,941 SHGs have been formed involving 63,743 women from urban areas.

He further stated that a cumulative Rs 746.80 crore has been disbursed so far as financial assistance (revolving funds) to SHG members, enabling them to manufacture goods and run businesses across various sectors.

Dr Saha also informed that from March 2018 to March 2025, a total of 17,554 individuals have been recruited into government service in the state. Additionally, 5,700 people were hired through outsourcing, and many others secured jobs via private sector initiatives and government-supported employment schemes.

The Chief Minister noted that Tripura’s current unemployment rate is now below the national average, thanks to targeted employment drives and policy reforms.

Present govt provided 17,554 jobs till March 2025 through transparent recruitment policy: Dr Manik Saha

Citing the Periodic Labour Force Survey by the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, he said that Tripura’s unemployment rate stood at 10% in 2018–19 against the national average of 5.8%. As of the latest data, it has dropped to just 1.7%, compared to the current national average of 3.2%.

He also took a dig at the previous governments, stating that earlier job allocations were politically biased, whereas the current administration follows a merit-based, transparent recruitment process. (Edited)
