On the occasion of the Kokborok Day celebration, the Tripura government decided to change the name of Gandacherra and Atharamura hill range.

While addressing a programme in Agartala held to observed the 44th Kokborok Sal 2022 on Wednesday, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb announced that from now on Gandacherra would be known as ‘Ganda Twisa’ and ‘Atharamura’ would be known as ‘Hachuk Berem’

Earlier, the state government had changed the name of Baramura to ‘Hataikotor’.

This year’s theme of 44th Kokborok Sal-2022 is “Matribhashake Samman Janai”. The programme was jointly organized by the Directorate of Kokborok & Minority Languages and Tribal Research and Cultural Institute at Rabindra Bhawan today. The Chief Minister and other dignitaries unveiled Kokborok Teacher’s Handbook, souvenir, magazine and other publication in the programme.

In his inaugural speech, the Chief Minister said, “Tripura government is committed to protect, preserve and improve the Kokborok language as well as indigenous culture and heritage. Paying respect to Kokborok language, the state government has decided to rename Gandacherra as Ganda Twisa and Atharamura as Hachuk Berem. Through tourists visiting Dumboor and travellers entering the state on road, the two new names will effortlessly be known to the world”.

Deb also said knowing other languages along with one’s mother tongue, helps in developing experience in life. Under the able leadership of the Prime Minister, amendment in national education policy has opened up the opportunity to seek education in one’s mother tongue, he asserted.

Kokborok-Day-Tripura-GandachheraThe Chief Minister hoped that the first-ever released Teacher’s Handbook and other publications would play a vital role in education and in the promotion of Kokborok language. Besides, the financial package of Rs 1300 crore will play an important part in the socio-economic development of the indigenous people of the state, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath pointed out several steps taken by the State government for the promotion of Kokborok language.

“Two memorial awards are being awarded for contribution in Kokborok language and literature. Seeking education, job and income in Kokborok has become possible. Kokborok subject is being taught in 45 schools in the state from Class 1 to Class 8 on primary level. Secondary and Higher Secondary level Kokborok subject teaching schools have been increased. Kokborok has been given importance even in case of government recruitments”, Nath said.

Tribal Welfare Minister Mevar Kumar Jamatia in the programme said, Kokborok language is being spoken in Tripura as well as outside the country. About 15 to 20 lakh people speak in Kokborok.

Among others MLA Dr Atul Debbarma and other senior officials were present in today’s programme.
