Known as the Angkor Wat of Northeast, Unakoti in Tripura will undergo a massive facelift through beautification initiatives and development. To make it more attractive to tourists, Tripura Tourism Development Department received financial assistance worth Rs 140 crore from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The Tripura Tourism Department, led by the Tourism Minister of Tripura, Sushanta Chowdhury, is making efforts to enhance the cultural and traditional significance of Tripura by developing various tourist spots. As part of a special initiative, the Department has chalked out a comprehensive plan for the beautification and development of Unakoti – a major tourist spot.

The Tourism Minister visited Unakoti on Tuesday and held discussions with concerned officials regarding the special plans.

Chowdhury mentioned that the project had received substantial financial support of Rs 140 crore from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The funding would be used to transform Unakoti into a promising tourist destination, showcasing Tripura as a major tourist hotspot in the global arena.

The Minister disclosed that there are several other comparable projects in the works, with the goal of drawing tourists to lesser-known tourist destinations throughout the state, including the Unakoti district. Construction on these projects will begin soon.

Among the upcoming developments is the rejuvenation and beautification of the abandoned Sonamukhi tea plantation, located close to the famous tourist spot – Unakoti Archeological site.

“A three-star hotel, a large resort, a gymnasium, and a park in the now deserted Sonamukhi tea garden will be established soon,” Chowdhury announced.

Chowdhury was joined by several dignitaries, including MLA of Kailasahar Assembly Constituency Birajit Sinha, former MLA Mobaswar Ali, Uttam Kumar Chakma, Secretary of Tourism Department Tapan Kumar Das, Director of Tripura Tourism Development Corporation Limited, and District Magistrate of Unakoti district Tarit Kanti Chakma during the minister’s visit. Other officials also accompanied them.
