Tripura’s goods transportation sector has received a significant boost with the announcement that Chittagong and Mongla Ports in Bangladesh will be accessible for the transit and transshipment of goods for Tripura and other parts of the Northeast Region. This move comes after the Bangladesh Government issued a notification designating four transit and transshipment routes for Tripura.

The four designated routes are Chittagong Port – Akhaura Agartala, Mongla Port – Akhaura Agartala, Chittagong Port – Bibirbazar Srimantapur, and Mongla Port – Bibirbazar Srimantapur.

During a press meeting in Agartala, Industry Minister of Tripura, Santana Chakma, shared this information with the media on Thursday. The decision marks a crucial step forward in enhancing trade and commerce between the two neighboring regions.

Santana Chakma said, “With these routes now open, goods can be seamlessly transported from various seaports in India to Chittagong and Mongla ports in Bangladesh, and then onward to other states in the North-Eastern region through Agartala. This strategic transportation network is set to not only bolster business and trade in our states but also significantly reduce transportation costs and delivery time.”

The notification issued by the Bangladesh government in April this year has paved the way for closer economic ties between India and Bangladesh, enabling smoother trade operations for both countries.

Principal Secretary of Industries and Commerce Department, KM Shetty, Director of Industries and Commerce Department, Vishwasree B, and Director of Skill Development Directorate, Sanjay Chakraborty were also present in today’s press conference.

The agreement to utilize Chittagong and Mongla ports in Bangladesh for goods transit and transshipment is expected to foster economic growth and open up new avenues for businesses in Tripura and the entire North-Eastern region, strengthening the bonds between India and Bangladesh in the realm of trade and commerce.
