A group of five cattle smugglers from Bangladesh sneaked into the Indian Territory at Dharmanagar sub-division under North Tripura early on Thursday.
With a wire-cutter, they cut through the barbed border fence and made their way from Bangladesh to Tripura. Noticing the incident, a jawan from 139-Bn BSF who was on duty opened four rounds of fire at them.
In the firing, one smuggler sustained bullet injury and he was detained by the BSF jawans. During preliminary interrogation, the detainee informed the police that he was accompanied by four others- Sohel Miah, Sultan Miah, Montar Miah and Bachhu Miah. They had crossed the border to take eight cattle heads to Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, when the BSF party approached Dharmanagar police for taking the injured smuggler into custody, police denied it and asked the BSF to hand over only after the treatment. The injured smuggler is undergoing treatment at the GB Hospital in Agartala.
