Sabroom, March 2: The 79th edition of the Bankul Mahamuni Buddhist Fair began today in a vibrant and festive atmosphere in Sabroom, South Tripura. The annual fair marks a major cultural and religious event in the region.

Grand Inauguration Ceremony

Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma inaugurated the fair. Soon after, several distinguished guests joined the ceremony.

Among them were Venerable Wenita Mahathero, MDC Kanajong Mog, Sabroom Sub-Divisional Magistrate Suman Rakshit, BDO Pritam Debnath, social worker Bipul Bhowmik, and Manindra Tripura. Meanwhile, MLA Mailafru Mog presided over the inaugural function.

In his address, Bikash Debbarma stressed the importance of peace and brotherhood. He said the 79th Bankul Mahamuni Buddhist Fair would strengthen unity among tribal and non-tribal communities. Moreover, he expressed confidence that the event would spread harmony across the country.

Celebration of Culture and Rural Economy

The fairground now reflects a lively rural setting. Traders from different parts of Tripura have set up stalls. They are selling bamboo and cane handicrafts, handwoven garments, earthen pots, local food items, and traditional rice cakes.

At the same time, folk music performances and religious rituals have enriched the atmosphere. Cultural displays and devotional ceremonies continue to draw large crowds.

Importantly, the fair is not just a religious gathering. It also boosts the local economy. Rural artisans and small traders earn significant income during the five-day event. Therefore, the fair plays a crucial role in sustaining traditional crafts and livelihoods.

Focus on Community Harmony and Development

Last year, the 78th edition of the fair was inaugurated by Chief Minister Manik Saha. During that celebration, organizers unveiled 28 Buddha statues.
