Belonia (Tripura) Sep 30: A new feather has been added to the thriving Tripura tourism sector today with the introduction of a new attraction at the Trishna sanctuary in the South Tripura District.

A butterfly park, a new attraction in Trishna Sanctuary, located in Rajnagar under Belonia subdivision of South Tripura, known for its bison, was inaugurated. The park was officially launched on Friday through a colorful ceremony organized by the Trishna Sanctuary authorities.

Spread over approximately 5.5 hectares, the butterfly park was inaugurated by the Chief Whip of the State Assembly, Basudeb Majumder, in the presence of Forest Minister Naresh Jamatia, Chief Conservator of Forests Sanatan Talukdar, Chief Officer of Tripura JICA Project G.S. Raju, MLA Sudhan Das, South Tripura District Magistrate C.K. Jamatia, and South District SP Tapan Kumar Debbarma.

The welcome address was delivered by South District Forest Conservator Harsha Kumar, who stated that the butterfly park is a major attraction of Trishna Sanctuary in the state.

In his speech, G.S. Raju, Chief Officer of the JICA Project, said that the butterfly park was constructed with funds from the MGNREGA scheme through the joint efforts of the Tripura JICA Project and the Biodiversity Board.

Butterflies play a significant role in maintaining biodiversity, which is crucial for a healthy environment, and this park was built with that objective. Various colorful flowers and foliage plants have been planted to attract different species of butterflies.

Raju highlighted various aspects of the JICA Project’s main objectives. In another speech, Chief Conservator of Forests Sanatan Talukdar stated that the butterfly park is home to 105 varieties of colorful butterflies with reproductive capabilities.

The park is significant for environmental and ecosystem conservation.Chief Whip Basudeb Majumder expressed optimism that, alongside Trishna Sanctuary, the butterfly park will gain popularity among tourists in the coming days and pave the way for increased revenue. Minister Naresh Jamatia noted that bison are an endangered species, making sightings at Trishna Sanctuary a matter of luck. However, he commented that the butterfly park will become highly attractive to tourists. Notably, this is the first park of its kind in the Northeast region.
