Evicted street vendors of Dharmanagar in North Tripura have been relocated as promised by the concerned authority. A programme was organized at Dharmanagar on Saturday to announce the relocation.
Deputy speaker Biswabandhu Sen and other leaders were present in the stall arrangement programme.
The eviction drive created resentment among the street vendors – however, the Dharmanagar Municipal Council (DMC) authority assured that street vendors would be allotted space at designated places for running their business.
Working promptly, the DMC relocated all the evicted vendors near the Dharmanagar Fish Market as well as in Town Hall ground.
On December 26 last, the DMC demolished the stalls and evicted street vendors from Shivbari road premises, Babur Bazar and Juri River bridge areas in Dharmanagar.
This sparked tension and irked street vendors vented anger at the eviction drive. Amidst the chaos, the DMC authority and local Administration tried to persuade the irked vendors and assured them of rehabilitation. The officials also revealed possible locations.
The eviction drive was carried out as part of the beautification initiative of the DMC.
On the first day of the New Year, a programme was organized through which the DMC made permanent arrangements for evicted fish, meat and dry fish sellers at building near the Dharmanagar Fish Market.
Besides, the AMC has permitted the evicted fruit and vegetable vendors to conduct their business at Dharmanagar Town ground – however, the sellers will not be allowed to set up any permanent structure there.
In today’s programme, one Dom has been entrusted responsibility on permanent basis at the Dharmanagar Samshan Ghat.
