The general elections to altogether 21 Urban Local Bodies of Tripura including Agartala Municipal Corporation have been deferred and since the election could not be held in time, designate heads of the civil administration in the respective areas have been empowered to discharge duties as administrators. In case of Agartala Municipal Corporation, DM West Tripura would take charge as administrator on the other hand in other Municipal boards and Nagar Panchayats local SDMs would discharge the duty as administrator. A notification in this regard had been issued on Thursday specifying their duties.
“The State Election no.F.1(6)/SEC/MUNCIGEN/ELEC/2020/16081 dated 17.11.2020 has deferred the general election to municipalities of the state of Tripura till 27h February, 2021; Commission vide notification AND WHEREAS it is not possible to hold the general elections to the said Urban Local Bodies, before the expiry of the period of five years as referred above NOW, THEREFORE, in exercise of the powers conferred by the Tripura Municipalities(Administration) Rules, 2020, the State Governnment hereby specifies the following functionaries mentioned in column(V of the Administrators, for the corresponding Urban Locai Bodies listed in col.(). with effect from the respective dates mentioned in col.(V), so long as the new Municipalities takes over;” the notification reads that continued with the list of administrator.
According to the provisions of sub-section (1) of section 19 of Tripura Municipal Act, 1994 (Tripura the sooner No 7 of 1994) for every Municipality, unless dissolved, expiry of a period of five years from the date of its first meeting shall operate as its dissolution.
Since the five years tenure of all the urban local bodies were slated to end from December 17 to December 21 next. And, there were no possibilities of conducting the elections within that period, the decision was taken.
