Clean Jampui Hills Initiative Calls for Responsible Tourism
MCYW Urges Tourists to Respect local Culture, Cleanliness
Jampui Hills (Tripura), Jan 13: With tourism steadily rising in one of Tripura’s most serene hill destinations, the Mizo Convention Youth Wing (MCYW), Jampui, on Tuesday launched the “Clean Jampui Hills” programme, placing strong emphasis on responsible tourism and disciplined visitor behaviour to protect local life and social harmony.
Once known primarily for its quiet villages and close-knit community life, Jampui Hills has in recent years emerged as a favoured destination for tourists from across the state.
While the influx has brought economic opportunities and wider recognition, local residents have also begun to experience disruptions linked to unregulated tourist activity, prompting community leaders to step in.
Among the major concerns highlighted by the MCYW is the growing problem of littering in public spaces.
Plastic bottles, disposable plates, and other waste materials are increasingly being found along roadsides, in gardens, and near popular tourist spots, undermining the region’s long-standing reputation for cleanliness.
Community members fear that continued neglect could permanently damage both the environment and the image of Jampui Hills as a model destination.
Noise pollution has emerged as another serious issue. Loud music played from tourist vehicles and gatherings has reportedly disturbed daily routines in villages, interrupted church services, and caused discomfort to elderly and ailing residents.
Locals say such disturbances run counter to the peaceful atmosphere that has traditionally defined life in the hills.
Equally troubling, according to community leaders, is the open consumption of alcohol and other intoxicating substances in public areas.

Such behaviour, they noted, sets a poor example for children, creates unease among women and families, and stands in conflict with the cultural norms and social values upheld by the people of Jampui Hills.
Addressing these issues, Mizo Convention General Secretary Dr Zairemthiama Pachuau made a direct appeal to visitors, urging them to respect local sensibilities.
He outlined three key principles for tourists: refraining from littering, avoiding loud music within village limits, and not consuming alcohol in public places.
Observing these norms, he said, is essential to keeping Jampui Hills safe, orderly, and welcoming for both residents and visitors.
The launch of the programme also saw strong community participation, with over 500 volunteers from all ten villages across Jampui Hills taking part in a cleanliness drive.
Residents from different age groups worked together to clean village roads, streets, and prominent tourist locations, reinforcing the message that protecting social harmony is a shared responsibility.
In a press statement, MCYW Youth Wing President Lalduhsanga Thangluah and General Secretary Vanrokima Royte said the initiative seeks to create awareness about responsible tourism. It encourages tourists respect for local communities, and ensure that the region’s peace and cultural identity are not compromised by growing visitor numbers.

The MCYW has urged tourists, residents, and stakeholders to cooperate with the initiative, stressing that sustainable tourism can only succeed when visitors remain mindful of local customs and community life.
Leaders expressed confidence that with mutual respect and collective effort, Jampui Hills can continue to welcome tourists while preserving the social discipline and cultural values that define the region.
