In a clash between Congress and BJP in Tripura on Wednesday Jan 18), several persons including AICC Tripura in-charge Dr Ajoy Kumar were wounded.
The clash erupted at Majlishpur under West Tripura district close on heels of the announcement of Assembly polls in Tripura today.
With the initiative of Tripura Pradesh Congress a bike rally was organised which roamed around Agartala City area and later proceeded to Majislishpur and adjoining areas.
Lone Congress MLA of the State, Sudip Roy Barman alleged the local public representative, also a Minister himself stopped the bike rally after reaching Majlishpur and a stone pelting incident started.
Meanwhile, there was also a report of an attack on a BJP party office at Majlishpur. It is also reported a sitting Minister had an argument with Congress leader Ashish Saha at Majlishpur.
Moreover, Congress leaders and supporters came under attack at the Ranirbazar area in which AICC Tripura in-charge Dr Ajoy Kumar and others sustained injuries and several bikes of the rally were vandalised.
Roy Barman added, prior Police permission for holding the bike rally was obtained.
Dr Ajoy Kumar and other injured persons were shifted to the GBP Hospital while some of the injured persons ran away fearing more attacks.
After the attack, Roy Barman addressed media in Agartala today and said, we pointed out before the visit of the full ECI team in Tripura on last week that situation at some places including Majlishpur and Mohanpur is not conducive for holding elections.
In the wake of today’s attack in which our AICC leader was injured, we may demand holding elections in Majlishpur, Mohanpur and such other places on a different date, Roy Barman said.
He also demanded arrest of the Minister and actions other persons involved in the attack.
The attack drew sharp reactions from CPIM – AICC Tripura in-charge Dr Kumar recently held talks with CPIM to forge alliance for February 16 Assembly polls in the State.
CPIM State secretary Jitendra Choudhary went to the GBP Hospital and inquired about Dr Kumar’s health. Choudhury condemned the incident.
