The Tripura unit CPM remembered the party activist Dhananjoy Tripura who was shot dead during the Kakborok (language of the Indigenous people of Tripura) language movement under the rule of the Congress government in 1975. The party observed the day as martyrs’ day.
CPI-M state secretary Jitendra Choudhury accompanied by other party leaders and workers paid homage to the portrait of Dhananjoy Tripura at the party office.
On March 3,1975, people of the tribal areas were going to submit a deputation at Tehsil Kachari in Jolaibari under South Tripura demanding recognition of Kokborok as the state language, return of illegally transferred lands, restructuring of tribal reserves and formation of ADC etc.
Police fired on the people and leader of Ganamukti Parishad, Dhananjoy Tripura was killed. He became the 1st Martyr of the language movement in the state, said Jitendra Choudhury.
Blaming the then Congress government led by Sukhumoy Sen Gupta, he alleged that like the regime of the monarchy, the Congress Government in Tripura continued the exploitation and torture against the tribal people in particular continuously for three decades.
He said, “Remembering Dhananjoy Tripura in the current year of 2022 is more significant because since after the BJP-IPFT government was formed in Tripura in 2018, the tribal people across the state are being deprived at large.”
He also blamed the TIPRA Motha and other regional parties of Tripura and said, “Many tribal-based regional political parties have been formed in recent times in the name of welfare of the tribal people of the state and Thansa (Unity). They had no role in developing the Kokborok language”.
Choudhury claimed, if there is a place for Kokborok language today, it is because of the communist movement.
