Cyclone Remal’s fury wreaked havoc on Tripura’s electricity infrastructure, leaving many residents in the dark on Monday and Tuesday.
Tripura experienced heavy rainfall and strong winds on Monday under the influence of Cyclone Remal. The Power Minister of the State held a press conference at the Secretariat in Agartala to shed light on the extent of the damage and the ongoing restoration efforts.
Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath, accompanied by Tripura State Electricity Corporation (TSECL) officials, presented initial damage assessment to the media today. He said, initial assessments revealed extensive damage, with an estimated Rs 2.5 crore loss for the Power department. The cyclone toppled a staggering 686 electric poles and snapped 234 kilometers of power lines across the state, crippling power supply in Agartala and other areas.
Notably, power supply disruption hit water flushing out pumps became inactive resulting serious water logging in the city on late Monday night.
However, determined to bring normalcy back swiftly, the Electricity Department mobilized 3-4 teams in each subdivision. These dedicated teams, comprising electricians and contractor personnel, are working tirelessly around the clock to restore power. Minister Nath expressed optimism, saying that 80% of Agartala Division and 50% of Mohanpur Division could be reconnected by the end of the day.
While acknowledging the challenges, Minister Nath appealed to the public for their patience and cooperation. Residents are urged to avoid tampering with damaged electrical equipment and report any downed power lines immediately to expedite the restoration process. The department is working diligently to minimize disruptions and ensure a swift return to normalcy, the Minister informed the media.
TSECL Managing Director Debashish Sarkar and General Manager Swapon Debbarma were also present at the press conference, providing technical details and assurances to the public. Tripura residents are advised to stay informed through official channels for updates on power restoration progress in their respective areas.
