Cyclone Remal has brought moderate showers to Tripura since Sunday night, as predicted by the IMD, disrupting normal life on Monday with rains and gusty winds. The cyclone’s impact has been felt across the state, affecting power services, damaging crops, and disrupting rail services.
Tripura recorded 40.73 mm rainfall from 8.30 am to 2.30 pm on Monday due to the impact of Cyclone Remal. West Tripura recorded the highest rainfall of 59.5 mm during this period, while North Tripura district received the lowest at 27 mm. Arundhutinagar area in West Tripura district recorded gusty wind at the highest speed of 53.7 km/hour till 3.30 pm on Monday.
There were no reports of any major loss in any part of the state except for some roads blocked due to tree collapse. Disaster management teams, SDRF, NDRF, Civil Defence volunteers, and trained Apada Mitras were immediately engaged in clearing the roads. As per the warning issued by the IMD, moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning is likely to occur in various places across the state till Tuesday.
Air travel on the Agartala-Kolkata route has been significantly affected, with several flights cancelled, causing serious inconvenience to air passengers.
Rail operations have also been disrupted, with trains experiencing delays and cancellations due to the adverse weather conditions. This has affected both passenger and freight services. The storm has led to widespread power outages, with gusty winds and heavy rains damaging power lines and infrastructure, leaving many areas in the dark. Efforts to restore power services are underway but are being hampered by the ongoing adverse weather conditions.
Farmers in Tripura have suffered considerable losses, with crops damaged or destroyed by the heavy rain and winds. This is likely to have a long-term impact on local farmers. The state government has issued warnings and advisories to ensure public safety, urging people to stay alert and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their properties from the impact of Cyclone Remal.
All emergency operation centres and quick response teams have been working round the clock. Hospitals and other healthcare facilities have been put on alert to deal with any emergency. The Secretary of the Revenue department is in constant touch with the District Magistrates and is monitoring the overall situation.
Meantime, Power supply in several places across the State including Agartala city area has been severely affected. The power situation in village areas has been reported to be badly affected.
