Tripura’s judo athletes have extended their remarkable run at the East India Khelo India Women’s League Judo Competition on Wednesday, clinching an impressive tally of 11 medals within the initial two days of the tournament. Among these, three were gold medals, amplifying their dominance on the mats.
Indrani Das and Hema Debi emerged as the standout performers, securing gold medals in the 40 kg cadet division, showcasing their prowess and technical finesse. However, their victory was not solitary, as their compatriots contributed significantly to Tripura’s medal haul. Uma Begum, Sujeta Das, Debree Darlong, and Jisa Chakma displayed exceptional skills, claiming silver medals in the same category. Unfortunately, Sujeta faced an untimely setback, sustaining an injury during the final bout against Manipur, compelling her to withdraw from the competition.
In the 44 kg cadet division, Akanksha Ghosh exhibited commendable determination, reaching the bronze medal match but ultimately yielding to Manipur’s Judoka. Nonetheless, Poppy Bhaumik, Chandramukhi Chakma, Anusuya Reang, and Priti Sinha showcased their mettle, securing bronze medals in their respective weight categories, contributing to Tripura’s impressive medal count – 11, so far.
Earlier, the opening day set a promising tone for Tripura’s campaign, with Tania Das clinching the maiden gold medal in the sub-junior division, setting the stage for the state’s continued success in the tournament.
This flurry of victories has propelled Tripura to a notable position in the competition, amassing a total of 11 medals, including three golds, reinforcing their stature as a formidable force in the region’s judo circuit.
The competition is scheduled to run until November 30, and Mihir Shil, the Coach and Assistant Sports Officer of the Vivekananda Judo Centre in Udaipur, exuded confidence in Tripura’s judokas, foreseeing more triumphs and additional medals for the state.
Notably, five of the Tripura judokas participating in the event are students of the Vivekananda Judo Centre in Udaipur, while the remaining athletes represent the Tripura Sports School.
