With a call for global peace and universal brotherhood, thousands of followers of Islam joined the celebration of EidulAdha in Tripura on Sunday.

A large number of followers of Islam thronged Gedu Mia mosque in the capital city in the morning. They offered Namaz followed by exchange of greetings with each other.

Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha greeted the people on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha.

“Wishing everyone a peaceful and prosperous life on Bakrid,” Dr. Saha wrote in a Facebook post.

Former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb also extended his greeting on this occasion.

“Eid Mubarak! Greetings on Eid-ul-Adha. I pray to the almighty for everyone’s well-being and prosperity,” Deb wrote on Facebook.

The Eid-al-Adha, the festival of sacrifice, was celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety across the State including Jampuijala, Belonia, and Boxanagar, Kailashahar and other areas.

Devotees offered prayers for global peace and brotherhood. The celebration was peaceful in the State. However, resentment was noticed at Boxanagar over the place of offering namaz.

“Let the Eid-ul-Adha bring peace, tranquility and unity to our state and country”, Muslim religious leaders said.

This is for the first time after the Covid pandemic, people were allowed to offer namaz without any restrictions.

Even as the celebration was peaceful and joyful, a sense of resentment prevailed at Boxanagar under Sepahijala district.

With no more Covid restrictions in force, devotees in numbers assembled to offer namaz at the Eidgah where they were offering namaz since 1967, except the last two years.

Police told the devotees the land – the Eidgah – is under the control of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), so offering namaz there is not permissible. This sparked resentment, however, senior Police officials assured the devotees to look into the matter and devotees agreed to shift to the mosque and prayed there.
