Veteran CPM leader and former Speaker of Tripura State Assembly Ramendra Chandra Debnath passed away in Kolkata on Tuesday.
A long term MLA of the State Assembly, Debnath suffered a heart attack at Tripura Bhavan in Kolkata today and died. He was 66 and is survived by his wife, one son and one daughter.
The veteran CPM leader was suffering from diabetes for a long time as well as taking dialysis for kidney problem. He went to Kolkata for treatment few days ago and he was scheduled to return to Agartala today.
However, he became seriously ill before starting for Agartala. Without giving any chance of treatment he collapsed at Tripura Bhavan.
Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb condoled the demise of Ramendra Debnath. Expressing sympathy to the bereaved family members, Deb said, Debnath played the role of the state Assembly Speaker with efficiency for 15 years and everyone were shocked at his sudden demise. He was an MLA for three decades and the state lost a veteran politician.
Opposition leader and CPM Politburo member Manik Sarkar said, I am shocked at the sudden death of Ramendra Debnath. He recalled the contributions of the deceased leader and said Debnath was a popular leader which was proved, once again, after he won the Assembly polls in 2018 despite being physically unwell.
CPI-M State Secretariat expressed deep shock on the death of Ramendra Debnath and expressed sympathy for the family members. The party also remembered his contribution with respect in party works and parliamentary democracy.
Ramendra Debnath won in six assembly elections from Jubarajnagar Constituency in North Tripura since 1993. He was Speaker of the State Assemble for two times during the Left Front regime.
